The Autism Express: Art

Welcome Friends!

Hello and welcome to my humble bloggy abode. I am a mom to two boys and my youngest son is on the autism spectrum. I began writing about my experiences parenting my son on internet support groups even before his diagnosis. That was years ago as my Max is now entering the dreaded adolescent stage. Although I have a Master's degree in Special Education, nothing could truly prepare me for the challenges of raising a child on the autism spectrum. Most days have been a flying by the seat of my pants experience. I have learned a lot along the way and I still have much more to learn that is for sure. But one thing that helped me the most through this process has been the connections I have made to other parents, caregivers, teachers, and therapists involved with the care of folks who have special needs.

I am hoping to both learn from others and also reach out to anyone who is travelling a similar path. I cordially invite you to stay and hear of our many tales and adventures of The Autism Express.

About Max

"Max" is actually a name which my son sometimes chooses for himself. He is in love with the book, Where the Wild Things Are, where Max, king of the wild things, is his favorite character. My son and Max seem to have much in common, especially in the wild department. Max was diagnosed with Autism when he was three years old. Max has straight up autism and is moderately to severely affected. He is verbal but we aren't having in depth conversations...yet. Max is best described as joyful, exuberant, and mischievous. He loves a good laugh and especially when it is on me. Max has a wonderful gift for art and has drawn each and every day since he was about four years old. Sometimes he has used the wall as his canvas as illustrated here when he drew a headboard on the wall behind the bed. Mischief is Max's middle name.
